Freelance Indexing & Editing

Throughout undergrad and grad school, I’ve had the opportunity to work with scholars during the editing stages of their publications, from providing my thoughts and feedback to copyediting and indexing. I discovered I quite enjoyed the work itself, since it allows me to further hone my own writing skills and engage with new scholarship in the field. As of 2022, I’ve started working—at least in a more official capacity—as a freelance indexer, copyeditor, and manuscript formatter.

If you’re looking for some help with that work, please contact me via the form below. We can discuss what work you need and my rates for the different tasks.

Indexing

My first indexing job tackled updating and repaginating the 750-page second edition of Jacques Waardenburg’s Classical Approaches to the Study of Religion, which was quite an undertaking for a first-time indexer, but I learned the importance of a book’s index in helping support the goals of the author(s). In subsequent projects where I created the index myself, I worked to structure the index in such a way that it would support the overarching argument(s) of the book while also being a useful tool for a reader who is new to the subject. Rather than using indexing software, I read through the text to build an index based on the recurring arguments and concepts (in addition to the usual names, places, etc.) and grouping thematically similar topics even if they use different terms or are referenced without being explicitly named in the text.

Editing

I’ve done a variety of editing work over the years ranging from my co-edited volume Fabricating Authenticity (Equinox Publishing Ltd., 2024), to formatting, proofreading, and copyediting academic manuscripts, journal articles, and grant proposals. I have also created and edited audio transcripts for publication, both for in print and podcast episodes. I’m happy to tackle any and all of these jobs if you need some extra help, so please contact me via the form below.
