Graphic Design Work
I have 12+ years of experience designing a variety of marketing content and campaigns in higher education. When I first started these projects as a student office worker in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama, I had no prior experience. I learned Adobe Photoshop and InDesign on the job, and given my interest in and passion for this work, I have continued learning new softwares and design techniques over the years.
Dept. of Religious Studies at UA
In addition to the standard fliers we made to announce Dept. events and course information, I also designed the annual newsletter (2011-13), newspaper ads for The Crimson White (UA’s school newspaper), new branding content, business cards with each semester’s core course information, buttons for our annual button event, credit card style USB drives, tablecloths, and other department swag. I also regularly designed banners and large posters that we displayed both in the Department and elsewhere on campus. Here are a few examples of some of my work.
The Religious Studies Project
Since March 2021, I’ve designed promotional content (images, graphics, videos, etc.) for The Religious Studies Project. Take a look at the images below or check out the RSP on Instagram (@project_rs_) to see more examples of my work. I also redesigned the RSP logo as a part of this branding initiative.
This project aimed to create consistent branding content for our various publications, from our range of different podcast series/episodes, response essays, and promotional content. My goal in standardizing this information was to make it so that whenever one of our posts appeared on someone’s feed or timeline, they could automatically recognize both who posted it and what type of content we were sharing/promoting. See some examples below. Take a look, also, at how I apply this to our video content in RSP Promos & Teasers.
Regular Podcast Episodes
I created this template to market our standard podcast episodes on our social media platforms. The same graphic format is adapted somewhat for YouTube when we share the episodes on our channel. I created a few graphics templates to use throughout those videos so there would be some visual component for audio episodes.
Discourse! Episodes
I created this graphic with newspaper backgrounds for our episodes in our monthly sub-series, Discourse!: The RSP on Current Events, since those episodes focus on how religion is discussed in the news media.
RSP Remix Episodes
This is the promotional graphic template I created for our RSP Remix episodes. These short video episodes also have a variety of standardized graphics throughout the videos, adhering to the branding style/theme.
RSP Response Essays
I designed this graphic template to advertise the response essays we publish on the website. These essays invite a scholar to respond to an earlier podcast episode, so I created a different style/look for this design.
RSP Episode Teasers
Starting in 2021, I introduced teaser videos to advertise our forthcoming episodes each week. This would not only keep our new episodes on people’s radar, but also give them a better idea of what would be discussed in the episode.
